"Live Poets Society" - Learning to Read and Write about Poetry
Description:
During this unit, students will not only learn about poetry and poetic devices, but also about poets themselves, both canonical and contemporary. They will present the work of chosen poets to the class. By doing close readings of poems from diverse authors and time periods, students will apply what they learned about the elements of poetry, describing the author's use of specific elements in specific poems and how such elements contribute to the overall effect and artistry of the poem. By the end of the unit, students will be able to identify and analyze the elements of poetry, including words, characters and setting, imagery, figures of speech, tone, prosody, form, symbolism and allusion, and myth.
